Garlic Galore- our experience using garlic during the Worm Out Protocol

worm-out-pt-7One of the key pieces of the Worm Out protocol has nothing to do with the “Worm Out” product itself.  It has to do with using garlic for 7-10 days BEFORE starting the herbs.  You can use raw garlic or these garlic capsules.    Raw garlic often upsets people’s stomachs so the coated capsules help a lot.  The coating allows the garlic to break down later in the digestive system.  This usually helps minimize upset stomach.

The garlic helps to neutralize the parasites (remember our post on things they love/ hate?)  Garlic is full of amazing health benefits and often benefits digestion in and of itself.  Many people with parasites also have gut bacterial imbalances and the garlic can help with that as well.  Garlic is an incredible food-

Our experience using garlic

garlicWe used capsules and raw garlic for 10 days before starting the protocol.  Fortunately, my son really enjoys garlic.  He’ll chew half a clove with a meal or chop it and mix it with his other food.  One unique struggle for us is that we both have a condition called fructose malabsorption (FM) and garlic happens to be a trigger food for us, it can often lead to digestive issues.  We had to be careful to combine it with the right foods and lots of water to keep our tummies happy.

The first couple days of taking garlic we both had increased bowel movements within the first couple days and I had intense FM symptoms including heartburn and nausea.  I discovered quickly that if I had my garlic capsules with sauteed greens in healthy fat (usually lard or ghee) it helped a lot.   This only lasted 4 days and then the garlic really started working.

My son passed a few more pinworms during the garlic process and towards the end of our 10 days I was already noticing more regular digestion and decreased joint pain.  By day 8 I was craving garlic at breakfast.

During the garlic phase and throughout our Worm Out protocol we made sure to drinks lots of water and ate lots of greens.  Generally, we’d do sauteed greens with breakfast and raw greens with lunch and dinner.  Lunch is usually an all-veggie lunch with some sprouted raw pumpkin seeds too.  Pumpkin seeds happen to be another parasite cleanse super food and raw, sprouted seeds help increase their digestibility (plus Costco sells them now- bonus!)

We completely eliminated all fruit, honey, maple syrup and other sweeteners during our garlic time.  I don’t eat grains anyway but my son eats soaked/ sprouted gluten free grains.  He cut these out during the 10 days of garlic.  We also stopped consuming kombucha and other ferments during the garlic phase.

Once we wrapped up the garlic, we were eager to get started on Worm Out!  Come back next week to hear about what our first round on Worm Out was like.
