Why REST is so important- relax this Labor Day!!

Labor Day is coming up on Monday so we wanted to look at why is is important to get quality rest and ways to boost your ability to rest!  Hopefully you’ll have Labor Day off work and can enjoy time resting and relaxing.

Our society is becoming increasingly removed from the ability to rest.  We find ourselves constantly on the go, getting less and less sleep, and always bombarded with “to dos” and information.  Without proper rest we find ourselves stuck in the “fight or flight” response brought on by too much stress which can lead to health problems.  Study after study has shown a link between stress, lack of rest, and business with health issues.  Obesity, asthma, heart problems and more have been attributed to stress.

With “rest” we’re not just talking about sleep.  We’re talking about relaxing, doing nothing, and putting aside work.  We are talking about turning off the cell phone, laptop and tablet and truly enjoying the moment.  Our bodies were not made to multitask and modern technology can put a huge strain on our health.

Here are some tips to help you rest and relax on Labor Day and every day:

  • Deep breathing (10-15 minutes a day of deep belly breaths with eyes closed either sitting or laying down)

  • Create a “worry jar” where you write down worries and place them in the jar symbolically surrendering them and no longer ruminating on them

Write out your thoughts, anxiety and hopes before bed to help you sleep better!

  • Make a gratitude list and post it somewhere you’ll see it regularly- this will help decrease stress and help you prioritize

  • Turn off all screens at least 2 hours before going to bed.  Studies have shown this leads to better sleep

  • Set limits on when you’ll check emails, texts, Facebook, etc.  Pick 2 or 3 times a day to check in and turn off all notifications on your phone.  You’ll be more productive in the in between times without getting interrupted throughout the day and won’t feel stressed by alerts going off all day.  This is a TOUGH one to get started with but is super helpful once you adjust

  • yoga mountain

Get outside, practice yoga and enjoy nature to help unwind!

Try Grounding aka Earthing- this involves spending time barefoot on the earth which is said to help decrease stress and increase sleep levels (more information here)

  • Yoga

  • Reduce caffeine- excess caffeine use stresses our bodies and does not allow them to fully rest.  (We offer an herbal energy booster called N R G which is caffeine and sugar free)

  • Exercise

  • Prayer and Meditation

  • Essential Oils (especially lavender, geranium, patchouli, clary sage, chamomile, vetiver, and citrus oils)

  • Proper nutrition- eating too many processed foods is extremely taxing on our bodies and doesn’t allow them to rest and be nourished!

TriLight is happy to offer Peace Treaty, Snooze-EZ and Kava Kava to support good rest and sleep!
