Welcome Winter With These 8 Warming Herbs

We all know how to warm up from the outside- cozy blankets, hot fires, space heaters.  There are many ways to use herbs to help warm you from the inside as well!  Herbs are generally classified as “warming” or “cooling.”  No doubt you’ve noticed the feeling of warmth after eating curry or another spicy food, this is because you were consuming warming herbs!  Most warming herbs tend towards the spicy side, but not all.

These herbs are great to incorporate into an herbal tea, added into your daily bone broth, or used in cooking.  Many are herbs you’ll see used in many winter recipes.  Some of these herbs can also be used in a warm bath!

Try these warming herbs this winter:

  • Ginger

    • Fresh ginger can be found in the produce department of most grocery stores, it resembles a hand covered in brown paper.  Fresh ginger should be peeled before use.

  • Black Pepper

    • Try freshly cracked black pepper- it’s full of flavor!

  • Horseradish

    • Many natural food stores carry fresh horseradish as well.  It has a potent fragrance and warming capabilities.  Dried horseradish is also warming.

  • Cayenne

    • Use fresh cayenne with caution and always wear gloves when handling.  Ground, dried cayenne is more user friendly

  • Cinnamon

  • Nutmeg

    • Nutmeg can be ground at home or purchased pre-ground.

  • Cardamom

    • Try grinding your own cardamom for full flavor.

  • Garlic

    • Raw garlic will be more warming than cooked and is easy to incorporate into dishes.
