Herb of the Day: Yarrow

Herb Of The Day Yarrow

This pretty plant is a favorite among both herbalists and birds!  Many birds use yarrow as a lining in their nest.  Use of this plant in nests helps to repel parasites and mosquitoes from the nest.  Humans have used yarrow for quite some time to stop bleeding and heal wounds.  In fact, the scientific name Achillea Millefolium stems from Greek mythology and Achilles.  Yarrow is one of our most used herbs at TriLight, it has a pleasant flavor and a wide number of herbal applications.

The Plant

This plant is fairly easy to grow in a variety of climates.  It grows in conditions similar to daisies, echinacea, and sunflowers.  Best propagated from a cutting, grow yarrow 18-24 inches apart and provide it with full sun.  Yarrow will grow in a variety of soil moistures and requires fairly little maintenance. In early to mid-summer, yarrow will start blooming tiny yellow, white or pink flowers.  Yarrow is often referred to as the “plant doctor.” The leaves are anti-fungal and help repel parasites, mosquitoes, and fungus.  Gardeners love to add yarrow to their compost pile as it helps speed composting!   When yarrow is planted near unhealthy plants, it releases substances from its roots which help the plant.

One Response to Herb of the Day: Yarrow

  1. Abbie says:

Very educational post! I didn’t realize how many things yarrow can help with. I love that you can plant it in a garden and it can help with plants that are not doing very good. I will have to try this when we plant our garden this spring!
