Wintergreen is typically associated with toothpaste, gum or mouthwash. Generally, this is a synthetic wintergreen flavor that lends the cool minty flavor we’re familiar with. This shrubby evergreen native to North America contains methyl salicylate which is similar to aspirin and has historically been used by Native Americans and early American settlers for headaches and pain relief. Wintergreen is often added to pain-relief creams and gels as well. Herbalists use wintergreen typically in teas and tinctures, the oil is also popular among aromatherapists.

Gaultheria procumbens is a creeping North American evergreen shrub. Growing up to six inches tall and keeping its leaves year round, evergreen displays white bell-shaped flowers during the summer and then give way to edible berries. The red berries have a unique sweet flavor which offsets the famous flavor of the wintergreen leaves. Wintergreen in an important winter plant for animals and grows well in zones 3-7.
