Slippery Elm has a fascinating history. When settlers first arrived in America they discovered Slippery Elm as one of the earliest sources of food. The inner bark is extremely nourishing and stays with you for quite a while. In fact, George Washington and his troops survived off Slippery Elm during their time at Valley Forge. Early American colonists used this bark for pudding, as a thickener for jelly, and medicinal uses. Additionally, this tree was used in construction, made into boats, wheels, and even turned into fiber for clothing, ropes and more! Today, Slippery Elm is most commonly used as a poultice, in tea, or as an extract. This herb is high in mucilage and coats the throat nicely for irritation and coughing.

Ulmus rubra is the scientific name for Slippery Elm. The tree is found around the United States and Canada in forests. Although the tree tolerates low levels of moisture it thrives in humid climates! Typically found between 40-60 feet tall with 4-8 inch long oblong leaves, it is the red bark of the Slippery Elm that is the most distinguishing feature. The underside of Slippery Elm’s leaves are rough and lighter green than the tops. Leaves emerge light red, turning green in summer and yellow in the fall. It is the inner bark that gives this tree its name, it is extremely sticky! Slippery Elm is currently listed as an at-risk plant in the United States. Because of this Slippery Elm should not be harvested unless with a professional who is harvesting in a sustainable way.
