Herb of the Day: Pau D’Arco

Herb Of The Day Pau D'Arco FB

In the rain forests of South America grows a beautiful towering tree up to 125 feet high.  This is the tabebuia avellanedae or Pau D’Arco tree.  The inner bark of this tree has been a staple in Amazonian medicine chests for centuries and is rapidly gaining popularity in Western Medicine.  The wood is extremely hard and has traditionally been used to make hunting bows.  Pau D’Arco is best known for its detoxification properties and has said to be able to kill off parasites, bacteria, candida and fungi.  Herbalists typically prepare Pau D’Arco in teas, tinctures or extracts.

The Plant

Pau D’Arco is an evergreen tree found in Central and South America.  It grows in warm climates and often reaches heights of up to 125 feet tall.  Growing beautiful rose colored flowers with leaves that grow in whorls, Pau D’Arco stands out among its habitat.  Unfortunately, Pau D’Arco has been overharvested and should not be wild-harvested (although the wood is SO tough, self-cultivation is difficult anyway).
