Herb of the Day: Myrrh

Herb of the Day Myrrh- ViraMune, Soothing Salve, Lympha Rub, Scout Out

On this day, we remember the story of baby Jesus being brought gifts of Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh.  Gold is a substance we’re all familiar but the other two are a bit mysterious to us in modern life.  They’re both resins of great value both medicinally and wealth.  Myrrh has a long history of use and is mentioned multiple times in the Bible as well as other historical texts.  It’s highly valued and can be quite expensive to obtain.  Myrrh is added to dental care products, used in many religious ceremonies and used by herbalists and aromatherapists.   With a pleasing aroma and numerous benefits, it’s no surprise this was one of the gifts brought to Jesus.  The resin of often burned for medicinal and aromatic use, additionally converted to an essential oil to be utilized in many of our products.

The Plant

Myrrh is known by the botanical name Commiphora myrrha but is also frequently known as Balsamodendron myrrha.  The resin is extracted from the thorny tree.  They are small trees growing up to about 9 feet tall and very bushy.  There is some mystery as to where this plant originated.  Harvesting myrrh is a fascinating process.  The gum, or resin, forms within the tree and is released only when the bark is wounded.  It flows from the tree as a pale yellow color where it quickly thickens to a reddish resin.
