Goldenseal, a member of the buttercup family, is listed as an endangered plant in the wild. However, great efforts are being put forth to conserve this amazing herb. It is difficult to grow and is an extremely slow growing plant. Before growing goldenseal check with local laws as endangered plants often have growing restrictions.
Goldenseal is a perennial plant that prefers woodland areas. Plant as seed or seedlings, give it extremely rich soil, mulch, lots of shade and patience. It can take three or more years to establish a goldenseal plant. The plants will grow to about a foot tall and will grow small flowers after approximately two years. The flower will give way to a fruit that resembles a raspberry but is NOT edible. The stem is covered in small hairs with scales towards the bottom. The roots have a stunning yellow color. All parts of the plants are used in herbal medicine but the root is most frequently used. Harvest the tops when they are still green, give the roots 3-5 years before harvesting.
If you are wishing to harvest wild goldenseal check local laws as it is endangered and illegal to harvest in many states.
