The Plant

Syzygium aromaticum is a tropical evergreen which is partial to specific growing climates.  Native to Asia, clove plants require rich loamy soil, warmth and ample moisture.  The tree takes 20 years to begin to flower, at which point it produces rose bell-shaped flowers in clusters on the branches.  It is only when the tree has flowered that clove can be harvested.

My first memory of cloves is from childhood when my grandma gave me a stick of clove gum while on a car trip. Now every time I smell cloves I go back to that memory – and love it. Lately I have been enjoying warm rice, coconut oil, and honey, with ground cinnamon and cloves sprinkled on.
