Herb of the Day: Astragalus

Herb Of The Day Astragalus

Astragalus is a sweet herb with rich history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine.  This root is  known as an adaptogen.  Adaptogens are herbs which help the body to respond and adapt to stress.  This could be a stressor from something outside like work, family, moving, etc. or an internal stressor such as an illness.  Herbalists often use astragalus with people for colds and allergies.  There is also research being conducted on the use of astragalus with HIV/ AIDS patients as it helps to strengthen the immune system and fight infection.  It is commonly used in teas, tinctures, capsules, and even food (it makes a delicious addition to broth and an astragalus infusion is often used to cook rice or other grains).

The Plant

Astragalus membranaceous is a member of the Fabaceae (aka pea) family and is native to China, Mongolia and Korea.  It is a perennial which is quite easy to grow.  Astragalus will grow 2-4 feet tall with bright green leaves growing in pairs.  Typically up to 18 pairs are found on a stem.  Beautiful small yellow flowers bloom in the summer which will then give way to seedpods.  Plant from seed in sandy, well-draining soil with partial to full sun and Astragalus will grow. Only requiring a moderate amount of water, this is a fairly easy plant to maintain.   Herbalists use the root which is typically not harvested until the plant is 3-5 years old.  The root can be used fresh or dried out.
