Essential Oil of the Day: Lemon

A favorite addition to many foods and drinks, this sour little fruit found its way into our lives in the mid-1700s.  British sailors discovered they could prevent scurvy by having their crew consume lemons.  James Lind with the Royal Navy was the pioneer of this research. He gave his sailors enough citrus to have two per day, they primarily added it to water as a juice.  We now know it is the high vitamin-C content in lemons that helps keep scurvy away.  Lemons have since become a household staple and are used in a wide range of culinary dishes, as well as by alternative and mainstream medical practitioners.

Lemon Essential Oil

Small bottle of Lemon Essential OilCitrus Limonum is steam distilled from the peels of the lemon.  It is a popular component in many beauty-care products, insect repellents, and household cleaners in addition to the above uses.  Citrus oils, such as lemon, are also commonly used as a mood-booster to help aid in stress relief and depression.  You’ll often find lemon added to essential oil blends popular in the winter.
