Top 10 Herbal/ Home Remedy Mistakes

Obviously, we are proponents of herbal remedies.  However, many people assume that because something is an herbal/home remedy there is not any margin of error in use.  We want to help bring attention to these top 10 common mistakes.

  1. Giving up too quickly.  This is by far the most common error in herbal and home remedy use.  People will try something for a few days, not see an immediate effect and give up.  Many herbal remedies work best with consistent use over a long period of time.  A general rule of thumb herbalists use is that it takes about one month of healing for every year of damage.  People using herbs for chronic illnesses might not notice any change for months.  Sometimes with herbal and natural remedies, you may get worse before you get better.  Seek the help of a well-trained herbalist or other holistic provider to help with chronic illness and stick with it for the long term- don’t expect results as quickly as a prescription might mask symptoms.
  2. Not looking into interactions between remedies and prescription medications.There are some herbal remedies that are contraindicated with prescriptions.  (For example, Kava Kava and St. John’s Wort should not be used by people taking antidepressants)  Always read the insert that comes with your prescription and research any herbs you choose to use.
  3. Mixing remedy types.  Many people combine homeopathy, herbs and essential oils.  In some cases, this can lead to a negative effect, reaction or even cause the opposite of the desired outcome.  Stick to one type of remedy or seek the help of a trained practitioner.  Herbalists, homeopaths, classically trained (not-MLM trained) aromatherapists, and naturopaths are good options.
  4. Utilizing home remedies/ herbs before or after a surgical or other medical procedure.  Just like #1- sometimes remedies can cause problems such as excess bleeding or other undesired symptoms.  Always check with your doctor to make sure none of your remedies need to be discontinued prior to your procedure (in some cases they may need to be stopped for several weeks).
  5. Taking certain herbs when sick.  Herbs can help a lot during sicknesses.  However, certain herbs such as tonic herbs can actually make your sickness get worse instead of better (N R G is an example of a tonic formula which should be discontinued when sick).
  6. Utilizing herbs or remedies that have an opposite effect at the same time.  If you’re going to use more than one product at a time make sure they have a similar effect.  Many people unknowingly take two products that are actually doing the opposite things from each other!
  7. Relying on herbal/home remedies when medical care is needed.  We get not wanting to be put on prescription medication. However, if you find yourself constantly relying on herbal products for recurring sickness, tiredness, or pain it is time to seek out medical attention to determine the root cause of these issues.
  8. Regularly taking immune-boosting herbs if you have an autoimmune disease. Individuals with autoimmune disease should avoid regularly consuming herbs such as elderberry and echinacea.  These can further stimulate the immune system to continue attacking itself and make your autoimmune disease worse.  Short-term use during an illness is generally ok with proper supervision from a practitioner but they should not be used daily as many individuals do during cold/flu season.
  9. Not giving enough time between products.  In general, you want to allow at least a couple hours between product.  This is true for utilizing multiple formulas of our herbal remedies (such as 2 different cold remedies) or if you’re taking prescription medication at the same time as any home remedy.  You can certainly use multiple TriLight formulas on the same day but you’ll get best results letting them be spaced out a bit.  Some prescription medications have a specific time window you need to honor so make sure to check that out before you take them!
  10. Going off prescription medication in favor of an herbal/home remedy without talking to the doctor.  Sometimes this will take some footwork to find a doctor who has the knowledge of these types of remedies.  Never be afraid to seek a second opinion or do some extra work to find a more holistic doc. However, you never want to abruptly discontinue a prescription without talking to your doc first.  Some medications require you to slowly wean off of them.

    It took me 6 mos of daily use of vitex b4 my periods normalized. Its supposed to take like 3. Luckily I had read it could take alot longer. The sicker you are, the more to heal.
    I always give twice as long as recc’d for remedies as Im a tough case. More of us are than we want to admit…
    And I wouldnt take a supplement now without a break. 3 wks on, 1 off is my rule of thumb. For rly irritating things like insomnia, I just take it a couple days and then not for a day. That way I might only lose a nite’s sleep, not a whole wk. Ive been taking milk thistle several yrs and recently burdock last 5 mos.
    Now an actual food like ground tumeric, I take pretty much daily to help my pain. Ground cinnamon (ceylon cinn, not the fake stuff) also is pretty daily to help with bld sugar control.
    I also use EOs internally…5 drops oregano oil daily for vitamin C and antifungal.

    I feel the need to comment. One important thing people overlook is these supplement type drinks like Zeal for life, etc. They often include a ‘proprietary blend’ of herbs, vitamins, and minerals – that means one cannot measure the amount of each ingredient. I have been accosted by people trying to sell these types of products to me for my health, but when I look at the list of ingredients and comment I cannot take the product because of this herb or that, they seem instantly offended. Then actually give medical advise (i.e. just try a tiny amount per day until you can build your body up to the recommended dosage.) Or diagnose (i.e. oh, you have a sensitivity to caffeine? Than you have a compromised immune system and this will actually help you fix it, even though it contains a boat load of caffeine in it.) Or tell you to ignore your health professional’s advice (i.e. oh, I know you have a history of miscarriage & your doctor told you to stay away from known abortifacient herbs such as moringa, ashwangandha, etc., but, there are only tiny bits of it in this, so it would be great as a prenatal for you! True story.) I know most people who use more natural approaches to health usually research what they put in their bodies beyond just what the salesperson said, but please don’t overlook essential oil blends and these supplement type drinks. Not trying to rant, just a warning.
